Quick Facts
Overview
Mondelēz International is the world's largest pure-play snacking company, with products sold in more than 150 countries. The name "Mondelēz" is a combination of monde (world in Latin and French) and delēz (evoking "delicious"), coined by an employee during a naming contest in 2012. The company's portfolio is dominated by biscuits (49% of sales), chocolate (31%), gum and candy (11%), beverages (3%), and cheese and grocery (6%). In 2024, Mondelēz generated $36.4 billion in revenue, up 1.2% year-over-year, with approximately 90,000 employees worldwide.
The company's corporate origins trace back to 1923 when the National Dairy Products Corporation was formed, later renamed Kraft Foods in 1969. After decades under Philip Morris (later Altria), Kraft Foods was spun off as an independent company in 2007. In 2010, Kraft Foods acquired British chocolate maker Cadbury for £11.7 billion. Then in 2012, Kraft Foods split into two: the global snacking business became Mondelēz International, while the North American grocery business became Kraft Foods Group (which later merged with H.J. Heinz to form Kraft Heinz in 2015).
Today, Mondelēz is focused almost entirely on core snacking categories — biscuits, chocolate, and baked snacks account for roughly 90% of revenue. Recent strategic moves include the acquisition of Clif Bar in 2022, the sale of its gum business (Trident, Dentyne, Chiclets) to Perfetti Van Melle in 2023, and ongoing expansion into cakes and pastries. CEO Dirk Van de Put, a Belgian national, has led the company since November 2017.
