Overview

Reitangruppen — now officially Reitan AS — is one of the largest privately held companies in the Nordic region. The story began in 1948 when Ole Reitan and his wife Margit opened a small grocery store called O. Reitan Kolonial on Nonnegata in Trondheim, Norway. Their son, Odd Reitan, took over in 1972 and transformed the modest family business into a multinational retail conglomerate.

In 1979, Odd Reitan founded REMA 1000, a discount grocery chain based on a simple premise: high quality at the lowest possible price, with no more than 1,000 product lines. By 1990, every Norwegian town with more than 10,000 inhabitants had a REMA 1000 store. The concept expanded to Denmark, and today REMA 1000 operates over 1,000 stores across both countries.

The group expanded into convenience stores, fuel stations, real estate, and investment management. In 2021, Reitangruppen was renamed Reitan AS and simplified its structure from five business areas to three: Reitan Retail, Reitan Eiendom (real estate), and Reitan Kapital (investments). In 2024, the group generated NOK 149 billion in total revenue — with retail systemwide sales alone reaching NOK 132 billion, a 5.7% increase from the previous year.

In 2022-2023, the group made a significant move by acquiring 114 ALDI stores in Denmark, converting them to REMA 1000 format and significantly expanding its Danish market presence. As of 2025, the company is exploring a potential IPO for Reitan Retail on the Oslo Stock Exchange.
